The Health & Safety First Aid Regulations 1981 state

"An employer shall provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities as are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling first-aid to be rendered to his employees if they are injured or become ill at work."

HSE Approved Code of Practice ACOP 3(1) supports the First Aid Regulations and gives the following practical guidance

"An employer should make an assessment of first-aid needs appropriate to the circumstances of each workplace."

New British Standard (BS8599-1)

Launched for Workplace First Aid Kits in January 2012

The current HSE First Aid at Work ACOP originally came into effect in 1981. In spite of revisions to this ACOP over the years, the basic recommendations for the contents of workplace first aid kits has not changed for many years regardless of developments in many other areas of workplace legislation and substantial advances in first aid product technologies.

BS8599-1 is a new standard that specifies the contents which should be included in Workplace First Aid Kits and provides guidance for the correct size of kit to be used in different types of workplaces. Produced in conjunction both with the British Standards Institute (BSi) and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), BS8599-1 is the first major revision to Workplace First Aid Guidelines for many years.

How does this affect you?
